Installing Synapse native linux client on Ubuntu

  • If you are running Ubuntu 7.10, then you may need to get some additional libraries. 
  • Download the Synapse linux client and store it in a directory named Synapse on your desktop
  • Change the permissions to make it executable
    • start up a shell
    • cd Desktop/Synapse
    • sudo chmod +x ./synapse-linux
    • and then enter your root password
  • Download the gnu truetype fonts, and place them in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ ... you will need to sudo nautilus to do this
    • download the fonts to the Desktop
    • unpack them to a folder fonts on the Desktop
    • start up a shell
    • cd Desktop/fonts
    • sudo mv *.* /usr/share/fonts/truetype/
    • and enter the root password
  • Start the client, and connect to your Synapse server
  • The user and server address will now be saved so that they default to them subsequently
  • Go to Settings/User/Misc, and click on the blue text to use the default settings
  • Go to Settings/User/PostScript and click on the blue text to use the default setting
  • Click on the [Save Config] button and you're done.
